From Shoveling Snow to Breaking New Ground
Winter seemed like it would roar on forever–like an overserved party guest–when suddenly it up and vanished. Just last week, weren’t we clambering over piles of old snow in parkas and heavy boots? This week, it’s all T-shirts and daffodils. Houston, we have spring!
Spring is the easiest season to love. It’s all about hope: the end of winter’s darkness, the retreat of the bitter cold, the promise of new shoots, and the return of color to the streets. At Sherman Architects, the thaw has brought a flurry of new activity. Here is what we’re planting this quarter.
Revitalizing a Classic: Chelsea Mews
We are pleased to announce we’ve been tapped to revamp the common spaces at the Chelsea Mews. This project focuses on the “first impressions” of the 12-story prewar loft building on West 23rd Street—transforming the lobby, public corridors, and sidewalk canopy. Our goal is to infuse these shared environments with a fresh, modern energy while honoring the building’s storied character.
Breaking Ground in NJ
Further down the coast, we are finally starting construction on a new freestanding house in Rumson, NJ. Perched at the farthest outpost of the NY ferries, it’s a terrific location and the former site of the Sears kit house our client grew up in.
Learning the ins and outs of a new municipality is always a challenge. In this case, we needed a complex zoning variance to secure township approval, but for our client, getting the house of his dreams was worth the wait. We’re especially excited to watch this one rise from the ground up.
What We’re Loving This Season
Material Crush: Terracotta Everything — Planters, tiles, pendant shades—terracotta is having a moment, and we’re here for it. Its warmth pairs beautifully with spring greens and makes any space feel instantly grounded.
Hidden Gem: The Squibb Park Bridge — This zigzagging pedestrian bridge links the Brooklyn Heights Promenade to Brooklyn Bridge Park. Its rickety initiation earned it some bad press, but don’t be fooled. It is a magnificent burst of beauty hidden at the tail end of Squibb Park, a forgotten understory to the Promenade. And it turns the crossing of the BQE into a thrilling act of pure joy.
Hot Tickets: IRONWIRE — Ava Eisendrath is a gifted young fashion designer (and our own former summer intern) who’s just opened her own pop-up store at 303 Broome Street. Ironwire is the English translation of her surname, and the brand is a sophisticated take on upcycled clothing. Go Ava!
